Vanuatu is a beautiful and special place
My name is Belle, and I am a returned volunteer from West Ambae, Vanuatu. I spent 5 months at Volovuhu Centre School teaching basic English to kids aged between 9-14.
Deciding to go to Vanuatu was a big decision for me, but it was possibly one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Teaching the kids is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience; there is nothing better than seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they understand a new concept! However the kids are not the only rewarding part of the experience. I lived with my host family permanently and I absolutely loved it! Through living with a host family I had the opportunity to learn more about Ni-van culture and traditional ways of life, while at the same time I was also able to teach them about my own culture, and how things are done in Australia; seeing how much your host family appreciates your presence is an incredibly humbling experience. Another wonderful aspect of volunteering with Lattitude is the friends I made throughout my time away, both within the community and with the other volunteers, these friendships are ones I will treasure for years to come.
Through moving to Vanuatu I was given the chance to immerse myself in a completely new culture, learn a new language, and make a difference to the lives of others. There were certainly challenges that presented themselves while I was away; however making it through those challenging times gave me a sense of encouragement and confidence.
While moving away from home to go volunteering may seem like a daunting experience, I cannot express enough how much I loved my time away, and how much I feel like it changed me as a person. Vanuatu is an extremely beautiful and special place, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure, and a love for children. You won’t regret it!
