Schools Assistant

Become a trusted confidant, mentor, big brother or sister, tutor, and inspiration to many students, particularly boarders living a long way from family.

As a SCHOOLS ASSISTANT, you will have the opportunity to experience becoming a valued staff member in an educational setting, without being ‘thrown in at the deep end’. You will assist qualified teachers and boarding house staff in their duties, and will take on the role of a trusted mentor, big brother or sister, tutor, and inspiration to students around the world. Each school will have specific duties that will become your responsibility. These usually involve a combination of boarding house duties, providing support to teachers in the classroom and undertaking a range of after school activities. You will become an active member of staff, whilst having the flexibility to bring some of your own personality to your role. The students are always very excited to have a Lattitude volunteer in their school, and any after-school clubs or activities you decide to set up are likely to be a big hit!

Our host schools are all different and as such the role is slightly different in every school. Lattitude aims to make the most of your individual strengths and match you to a school where you can be both comfortable and able to contribute your skills. For example, If you enjoy sports, you may be matched to a school that has requested a ‘sporty’ volunteer and will be encouraged to participate in PE lessons, coaching etc. Similarly, If you have an interest in the arts, you may be able to assist in various art departments, and get involved in extracurricular activities depending on your skills and interests. Volunteers are often asked to participate in outdoor education activities and field trips, and may also be asked to help out in the school office with administration tasks where needed. School life varies from week to week, and our host schools are always trying to keep things fresh and interesting for volunteers, so you can expect to get involved in a wide range of roles during your time away.

If you are placed in one of our host boarding schools, you will also play an important role in the supervision of the boarding house. Given that boarders will often be living far from home, you will become an important presence and role model to them during your time there. Working in a boarding school is not a 9 - 5 existence and you may sometimes have to work in the early morning or in the evening. Your duties may include getting boarders ready in the mornings, supervising bedtimes, helping with after school activities, homework and weekend excursions.

Most of these roles take place in the UK/IRELAND & CANADA, however we have a small number of SCHOOLS ASSISTANT placements in ARGENTINA, ECUADOR & POLAND, countries where English is not the first language. There, the role has less of a focus on boarding duties and more of a focus on helping students improve their English language skills. By talking to children in English, you will help them put into practice the skills they have already learnt in class, while introducing them to a real-life example of your culture. Your core duties will involve helping permanent staff in the classroom, which can mean helping to cater to different learning abilities or even taking lessons when teachers are away.

SCHOOLS ASSISTANT placements around the world are at preparatory schools for 7 to 13 year olds (some have departments for children from three years old), senior schools for 13 to 18 year olds, or schools which combine some or all of these. Many of our host schools are boarding schools however there are a number of day schools as well.

We also have specialist schools placements which may be establishments for blind or deaf children, children with physical disabilities or children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.  Past volunteers have found these placements to be particularly meaningful and rewarding.

Volunteers may receive a small allowance each week as a contribution towards expenses incurred. This is host country specific, and generally, placements in less-developed countries will not be able to offer pocket money. Volunteers will have ample time for tourism in the school holidays.
Accommodation varies from country to country. In UK, IRELAND & CANADA, volunteers are often provided
accommodation within the school grounds, in the staff wing of the boarding house, or in a cottage or apartment either on the premises or a short walk away. In ARGENTINA, ECUADOR & POLAND, accommodation is mostly with host families, which offer an amazing and insightful way to get truly immersed in the culture.

SCHOOLS ASSISTANT placements suit volunteers with a variety of interests. It may be sports, music, drama, arts or crafts. Host schools love volunteers that are enthusiastic about their interests and get stuck in with school life!
