Community Worker

Work within communities to provide assistance in meaningful ways, often to disadvantaged groups.

Lattitude has fostered relationships with a large number of non-governmental organisations and community organisations internationally. These non profit groups are devoted to helping others, and we are proud to offer volunteers the opportunity to be able to work alongside these highly trained specialists in their field. As a Community Worker you will have many opportunities to provide help and assistance to others.

You could choose to work alongside social care professionals helping people with special needs to live life with greater dignity and enjoyment. Work might be in a residential home or centre, and can range from under-taking activity sessions, shopping excursions, visits to the cinema, reading stories, and generally offering companionship. You could also help the staff in some administration duties, and in some placements you might also be asked to undertake some basic teaching. Working alongside professional staff, you will learn about ways to communicate and engage with people on all levels and you will draw on qualities of patience, tolerance and understanding. These are hugely rewarding placements from which you will gain a strong sense of achievement.

We have several excellent placements supporting disadvantaged youth in orphanage situations, as well as programmes that focus on street kids and troubled teenagers, to help rehabilitate and educate them to help them achieve a brighter future. Alternatively you might be involved in education and awareness programmes through partner organisations to highlight issues such as HIV and AIDS.

You could work in an eco-village, aiding in the caring of their children, the production of local products, and the promotion of eco-tourism. There are also a number of projects working with adults, including excellent programmes working with the homeless, with drug and alcohol rehabilitation, or with the elderly in respite care and hospices.

Also under the Community Worker category, we have limited opportunities to work as a Medical Assistant, in JAPAN & MALAWI. In this role, you will gain an insight into the medical profession, supporting staff with basic tasks and patient care in hospitals and community clinics. These placements are fantastic for volunteers interested in a career in the field of medicine. Medical placements in JAPAN are a fantastic opportunity to experience working in busy Red Cross hospitals. Typically duties include transporting patients around the facility, preparing bandages and dressings, collecting prescriptions and general work with the nursing and medical teams. MALAWI offers a more ‘grass-roots’ Medical Assistant option, where you could be assisting the local Health Officer, taking care of the needs of the local community and offering a front line medical service to patients. You could find yourself assisting with a range of situations, from broken bones & pregnancies to childhood vaccinations. In MALAWI the role is often shared with a teaching role to ensure the needs of the community are met.

Accommodation options, like the other roles, vary greatly from country to country. In the UK & IRELAND, your host organisation may supply you with a room in a flat/apartment, to be shared with other volunteers, or you could live on site, and you will receive an allowance for food. In FIJI & MALAWI, you will often be allocated host families. In ARGENTINA AND ECUADOR, we also use host families, with the exception of some orphanage placements, where you will live on campus.

The various Community Work options can all be challenging but are truly rewarding, and will give you a unique insight into the life of your new community. You will learn an enormous amount on the job, as well as enormous amount about yourself, and often these roles serve as an irreplaceable spring board into your future studies and potentially open up further career options.
